Compare·Molted vs Maritime
Maritime makes idle agents almost free by putting them to sleep. Molted keeps autonomous agents awake, healthy and equipped to act.
Maritime (YC F26) is a serious, well-designed platform and one of the closest products to Molted. It gives every agent its own Firecracker micro-VM with a persistent /data disk, runs Claude Code, OpenClaw, Hermes, ZeroClaw or any Docker container, and sells a flat plan that works out to about $1 per machine per month. Its trick is sleep/wake: an idle agent is snapshotted and costs only its storage, then wakes in about a second when a message, trigger or web request arrives.Molted makes a different bet. It is a managed operating environment for autonomous agents (OpenClaw today, Hermes and other runtimes on request) that stay on: they run as a heartbeat, watch and act before anyone asks, and come with recovery, versioned state, 1,500+ integrations, managed browser automation and their own mailbox and phone number. So the question is simple: are your agents mostly idle chat endpoints, or operators that need to be awake and equipped?

02The part nobody else builds
A single OpenClaw in production already fails in quiet ways: it crashes and stays down, a config corrupts and bricks the instance, memory spikes and the whole box goes with it. Run thousands of them and doing this by hand is not hard, it is impossible. You need watchers and recovery running every second. Maritime does not ship any of this. Like every general cloud, machine or agent framework, it hands you infrastructure, not a system that watches your agents and brings them back. Molted is that system.

02
If the pod itself fails, it is recreated automatically, with the instance state intact.
03
openclaw doctor repairs corrupted configs and the versioned filesystem restores a last known-good state.
04
If automated recovery cannot fix it, a critical alert fires with a full post-mortem of the failure.
On top of the four tiers, a RAM semaphore throttles startups and kills by priority before a shared node runs out of memory, so high density never becomes a crash. Crashes are caught in under 60 seconds and back online in under 90, with a post-mortem on every failure.
03Why Molted
Maritime gets a lot right. Real Firecracker micro-VMs give each agent strong isolation and a disk that survives everything. Sleep/wake with a one-second resume is clever engineering: a parked agent costs only its storage, which is why the price can be about $1 per machine. The developer experience is excellent, from an agents.md that lets a coding agent deploy on its own to a template library of complete, cloneable agents.
The end-users API is a thoughtful answer for startups that give each customer an agent, with per-user routing, spend caps and cost reports for rebilling. If your agents mostly wait for messages, Maritime is a strong and very cheap option.
Sleep/wake works beautifully for agents that answer when spoken to. It works against agents that are supposed to act on their own. Maritime's docs say it directly: timers inside a sleeping VM do not fire, so every schedule has to be moved into a platform trigger, and anything the agent would have noticed between triggers goes unnoticed. Keeping an agent awake is possible, at $20 per machine per month, on top of plan caps on how many machines can be awake at once.
Molted is built for the other case: OpenClaw-class agents that run as a heartbeat, watch inboxes, dashboards and channels, and act before anyone asks. Always-on is the default, not an add-on, and density from safe over-provisioning is what keeps it affordable.
Beyond lifecycle, the difference is the operating layer. Molted ships a supervising daemon that outlives the agent process, 4-tier self-healing with a post-mortem on every failure, config auto-repair, a versioned filesystem with point-in-time restore, 1,500+ managed integrations, managed browser automation for tools with no API, and a mailbox and phone number per agent so it can handle email, SMS and 2FA like a real operator.
For regulated buyers there are EU and US managed clusters, on-premise deployment and a Swiss cluster option. The same team operates molted.cloud for 300+ clients; molted.net is the canary surface.
The verdict
Maritime is one of the best ways to host many agents cheaply: Firecracker micro-VMs, one-second wake, a clean CLI and an end-users API, at about $1 per sleeping machine. Molted is built for agents that should not sleep: always-on autonomous agents with 4-tier self-healing, versioned state, 1,500+ integrations, managed browser automation, per-agent identity and on-premise options. Pick Maritime for idle, request-driven agents; pick Molted for agents that do the work on their own.
04FAQ
Yes, more than most. Both host OpenClaw and Hermes agents for companies that sell agents to their own customers. The split is lifecycle and scope: Maritime optimizes for cheap, sleeping, request-driven agents; Molted for always-on autonomous agents with recovery, integrations, browser automation and identity built in.
Through platform triggers, yes. Maritime's docs note that timers inside a sleeping VM do not fire, so cron jobs and schedules must be registered with Maritime, which wakes the agent. Background watching between triggers requires the always-on add-on at $20 per machine per month. On Molted the agent is awake by default and its own schedules keep running.
Maritime's October 2026 plans: Free with 3 machines, Starter $20/mo for 20, Growth $100/mo for 100, Scale $500/mo for 500, with caps on machines awake at once (1, 5, 25, 60) and always-on at $20 per machine per month. For mostly idle agents it is very cheap. For agents that must stay awake, compare the always-on total against Molted's per instance per day pricing, which already assumes the agent is on.
Both support it. Maritime has an end-users API with sticky routing, spend caps and per-user costs. Molted has a lifecycle API, multi-tenant isolation and a white-label dashboard, plus the operating layer your customers' agents need to do real work: self-healing, versioned state, 1,500+ integrations and per-agent mailbox and phone.
When your agents spend most of their time idle and wake on a message or webhook, when the lowest cost per parked agent is the priority, or when you want Firecracker micro-VM isolation with a polished CLI. Pick Molted when your agents must act on their own around the clock, recover without you, and reach tools, browsers, email and phones.
